Plot outline

The Black Abbot

Old Lord Henry Chelford is the owner of Castle Fossaway. His only interest is to find the magnificent Chelford treasure, which is supposed to be hidden amongst the ruins of the ancient Fossaway abbey. But the abbey is guarded by a creepy creature in a black clergyman's robe - the "Black Abbott". In a bright night the creature is seen once again and in the following morning, the dead body of the huntsman Smooth is found, in the fragile walls of the abbey. Scotland Yard is not by any means convinced that a ghost has murdered weird old Smooth, so Superintendent Puddler takes up investigations. As he settles into the Castle with his assistant, the events seem to sweep over…
