Paul Winkelmann obviously lives happily depending of his mother. He has impeccable manners and tends to be very sophistry, while at the same times he is extremely naive, awkward in the handling of objects and totally dispersed. His life comes to a turning point when he becomes acquainted with Margarethe Tietze, one not entirely young, single, psychiatric specialist, who is obviously also not entirely independent of her parents. Paul, for the first time in his life, generates a feeling toward the other sex, apart from the relation to his mother. He manages to persuade Margarethe for a joint weekend trip to Italy. When informing his mother about this plan, it triggers the first fundamental tensions between them in 56 years. It becomes obvious, that mother Winkelmann is not willing to leave her son to another woman. Also a family get-together between the two families turns itself into a tragic social event.
After 30 years the first West German film that was released simultaneously in the BRD and the GDR.
