Plot outline

Shortly after the execution of cheque counterfeiter and murderer ShelSound, the people who where responsible for his death are sequentially killed one after the other by very mysterious means - just as ShelSound had threatened before his execution. Scotland Yard is helpless: Despite expanded safety precautions for those alive, there seems to be no escaping from their fate. Who is the mysterious unknown, who appears on the murder scene, lifting his gloomy, claw-curved hand - only to immediately disappear again? When ShelSound's grave is finally opened, there is no corps but only a death list. Perhaps ShelSound isn't dead after all? Young Chief Superintended Long eventually comes across a ring and a strange oil painting, - which seem to be the key of the mystery?
